weekend update
Yeah, so I'm all about the lists lately.
daenale sent me this article written by Gil Loescher for OpenDemocracy about his experience in the UN bombing in Baghdad in August. As I mentioned before, Gil was one of my professors in college, and he was technically my advisor (although I only met with him a few times). His "International Humanitarian Issues" class was what convinced me to change my major. He was a huge bear of a man -- seriously, close to 7 feet tall. And now he's lost both his legs above the knees. . . I just can't imagine it. I knew he was in the blast and had survived, but I didn't know he was the *only* survivor from that part of the building, or that he'd had to hang upside down for three hours. . . Just. Wow.- My room is really, really cold.
- I was supposed to drive up to Ossipee tomorrow, but somehow, I don't think that'll be happening. The predicted day of snow and sleet just doesn't make a 2 hour drive (which would no doubt turn into 4) each way all that appealing. Um, yeah. I think I can make my trip on Wednesday, instead. Uh huh.
- Had a good time at the party on Friday night. For some reason, the pickins are extraordinarily slim for Christmas trees this year; I picked out the most reasonably-sized one I could find, but it was a monster -- right height, just really big around. We carried it inside, and the next thing I knew I was laying on the floor, still wearing my coat and bag, trying to screw the thing into the stand. I couldn't move my head because the needles were jabbing into my skull. There was lots of yelling, and then I was overcome by a severe case of the giggles.
- My case of the giggles had quite a bit to do with the fact that it'd been a frustrating and rocky trip down, I hadn't eaten much of anything all day (except for the excellent turkey sandwich Seema had waiting for me when I picked her up), and I'd had to listen to wacky and annoying radio on the ride down. Because the pick-up truck sucks.
- So anyway, back to the party. I decided that it would be best for all involved if I stayed away from the (rather slutty) tree, and let other people deal with it. Because that tree was a HO. It was molesting everyone left and right. Of course, it spent most of the party lying on its side in the middle of the livingroom while boys argued about finding a big enough saw to trim the branches. After three hours, they finally got it to stand up, but it continued to proposition poor, unsuspecting passersby.
- The rest of the party was fun, too. I decided to
pick a fightplay with Carrie-Anne's cat, Viv. Probably not a smart idea. I quickly got her all riled up, and then when I tried to calm her down and play nice, she turned around and scratched me across the chin. Turns out, it was a pretty deep cut, and I was bleeding all over the place. Seriously kids, don't piss off that cat. - I was, for some unknown reason, the only person who found that amusing. No, wait, Liz's little sister (#2) found it pretty funny, too. I think.
- Liz's sisters were hilarious. I particularly enjoyed the part where Sister #1 told Sister #2's teacher (who was pretty loaded) that he was a fuckhead. (Sister #2 was already asleep.) Even funnier was the discussion the next day, when #2 said, "Wait, you called my teacher a fuckhead!?!?"
#1: "He said something insulting about our family. Plus, I think his pants were tapered."
Entire room: "Oh, EWWWW." And then we all reminisced about that scary time when we thought any pants that weren't tapered looked like bellbottoms. Hard to believe that was just high school. - I also left an obnoxious and goofy voicemail message with Deb, but since I haven't heard anything, I'm guessing she's really pissed at me. I still haven't had a chance to make her Britney icon or her Paris icon. I suck.
- I know there was a yesterday, but I don't remember what happened to it. I think I did cleaning and laundry. . .
- We did some Christmas shopping today, which was fairly successful. I finally got a dressy watch (supposed to be a birthday gift), and I found the perfect casual, brown winter boots. What's more, they were 50% off. I adore the Nine West outlet. Really, I do.
- Now Lucy says it's time for me to go to bed, so I suppose she's right. Good night!
tired
And Nora---thanks again for the tree! I hit Target yesterday morning after mass (trying to beat the snow, which didn't actually arrive till much later) to get extra, lights, beading, ornaments, and tinsel, and C-A and I redecorated it that evening. It looks lovely. :)
I had a great time at the party. Thanks so much!
I'm glad the message was hilarious; I'm really not sure what all we said on it.
I do need to talk to you soon though. Really.
Oh! Also, I tried to download the Britney caps you made so I could do your icon, but I couldn't find them. You did upload them, right?
